Frequently Asked Questions About Small Business Insurance in Canada

Frequently Asked Questions About Small Business Insurance in Canada

Canadian business owners often ask whether they need $1 million, $2 million, or more in coverage. The honest answer is it depends on your business

As your coverage limit goes up, your premium usually does too. Many business owners choose the highest coverage limit they can afford to protect themselves against large claims.

Business insurance covers your business activities, not your personal life. That means it doesn’t replace your homeowner or condo insurance.

It’s also important to know that standard home insurance usually doesn’t cover business-related assets or liability (for example, a client slipping and falling at your home office).

In many cases, yes. Home-based businesses still face risks that personal home insurance does not fully cover.

While some home insurance policies may cover a few items you use for work, they often exclude business property and inventory, or business-related liability claims.

Business liability insurance won’t cover employee injuries, contractual agreements, or any intentional wrongdoing or criminal acts.

Many small businesses pay as little as $450 per year for $2 million in coverage. Your final price depends on factors like your industry, location, number of employees, revenue, claims history, and the products or services you offer.

If clients visit your workplace, you sell products or food, offer professional advice, rent out property, run a home-based business, or use a vehicle for work – you need it. Some industries are legally required to carry it. And if you’re not? One lawsuit or accident could cost you hundreds of thousands out of pocket.

Most Canadian small businesses start with commercial general liability, which covers third-party bodily injury and property damage claims. From there, coverage depends on your work: professional liability for advice-based services, commercial property for physical assets, cyber liability for client data, and commercial auto for business vehicles.

In most cases, no. There’s no general legal requirement for Canadian businesses to carry liability insurance. Commercial auto insurance is mandatory if you drive a business vehicle, and some regulated professions and municipal licences require proof of coverage. In practice, most clients, landlords, and financial lenders require a certificate of insurance.

Premiums depend on your industry, revenue, claims history, coverage limits, and location. Premiums start at $11 per month. A sole proprietor with no employees and low revenue pays considerably less than a contractor with a crew and heavy equipment.

Yes. Sole proprietors, freelancers, and self-employed professionals can buy the same core coverages as incorporated businesses, often at lower premiums because of lower revenue and no payroll. Because a sole proprietorship isn’t a separate legal entity, a claim can reach your personal assets, which makes liability coverage more important, not less.

You can get an online quote in about three minutes and, once your policy is active, receive a certificate of insurance the same day. If a client or landlord needs a COI naming them as an additional insured, a broker can issue one on request.

Report it to our Claims team as soon as it happens, even if you’re unsure it’s covered. Document everything: photos, dates, names, invoices, and any communication with the third party, if applicable. We will confirm your coverage, report it to your insurer, and they’ll assign an adjuster. Your insurer’s adjuster will collect all information about your claim and make a decision.
