October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Canada, and although the annual awareness initiative is a helpful reminder for business owners to consider their cybersecurity postures, protecting your small business’s finances and data from cybercrime is a year-round effort that’s strengthened with a comprehensive cyber insurance policy.

Data shows that 62% of Canadian small businesses don’t consider cybersecurity a financial priority, and only 18% have cyber insurance.

Concerningly, the 2025 Zensurance Small Business Confidence Index survey found only 7.6% of business owners regard a cybersecurity incident as their most significant liability risk, compared to 31.9% who cited a cyber-attack or data breach as their most significant risk in 2024.

And yet, a more recent Zensurance online survey of 1,000 Canadian small business owners, conducted in September 2025, found that more than half (53%) had already experienced an attack. Among those targeted:

  • 46% faced phishing attacks
  • 23% experienced malware
  • 19% were victims of fraudulent transfers
  • 6% endured ransomware attacks
  • 6% reported distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) disruptions

Beyond the stats above, we can give you seven real-life cyber insurance claims examples we helped our business owner clients resolve so they could get back to business:

1. Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) Attack

Client’s industry: Information Technology

Our client is the owner of a technology company that provides its customers with Software-as-a-Service (SAAS) options for analytics and web design. They experienced a DDOS attack that caused significant system downtime and operational difficulties.

Their cyber insurance policy covered over $29,000 to restore their systems and software, and also covered a portion of their income losses due to the system outage they experienced.

2. Email Account Compromised

Client’s industry: Retail

Our client’s email account was hacked, and the cybercriminal sent fraudulent invoices to customers in their address book, demanding payments.

The fraudster may have had access to our client’s email account for a while before sending the fraudulent invoices. Judging by the fraudulent amounts demanded of our client’s customers, it appears they knew how much their customers would expect to pay.

Although it is unknown how our client’s email account was infiltrated, their cyber liability insurance policy reimbursed each of their customers who were duped by the fake invoices to the tune of $31,000. It also covered our client’s remediation costs for the breach.

3. Ransomware Attack

Client’s industry: Healthcare

Our client was the victim of a ransomware attack that resulted in sensitive data being stolen and a ransom demanded in return to release the data back to our client.

Their cyber insurance policy covered over $200,000 in remediation, credit monitoring fees, legal counsel expenses, notification costs and employee overtime to deal with the fallout.

4. Ransomware Attack

Client’s industry: Graphic Design

Our client is a graphic designer who works for multiple customers. One day, they discovered several suspicious files on their web servers and noticed their antivirus software and system backups had been deleted. Alarmed by this, they smartly notified Zensurance and filed a cyber insurance claim.

Their cyber policy covered over $14,000 to investigate what was happening on their servers. Investigators determined a malicious actor had accessed our client’s systems and was preparing to launch a ransomware attack against them.

This one ended happily, as the attack was caught in time to prevent a full-blown ransomware attack on our client, and their systems were cleansed, restored, and re-secured.

5. Website Deleted

Client’s industry: Digital Marketing

Our client is a digital marketing agency that builds and services websites for their customers. Unfortunately, our client’s website and many of their customers’ sites were hacked and subsequently deleted. They were completely offline(!).

Their Zensurance cyber insurance policy covered over $12,000 to cover the cost of rebuilding the deleted websites.

6. Social Media Account Hacked

Client’s industry: Digital Marketing

Our client’s Facebook account was hacked and infiltrated. The cybercriminal accessed our client’s account to steal their customers’ credit cards that were being used to run legitimate marketing campaigns.

The hacker used those credit cards to pay for their own malicious ads on the network.

Their cyber insurance policy reimbursed them for over $8,000 in damages.

7. DDOS Attack

Client’s industry: SaaS Analytics

Our client works in Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) analytics to help their customers analyze data and optimize their operations to improve performance.

Bots attacked their customer intake form at a rate of two submissions per second, overwhelming their systems. Each submission incurred a cost.

Our client was forced to shut down their server to halt the DDOS attack until it could be resolved.

Their cyber liability insurance policy covered over $17,000 of their remediation costs and those expenses incurred by their customers as a result of the temporary systems outage.
